According to the American Dental Association, more and more women are entering dental school, and there are now almost 60,000 women now practicing dentistry in the US. Although this is only about 20% of all dentists, the number continues to grow – and patients like it!
North Boulder Dental Group has five practicing dentists, two of whom are female: Dr. Stephanie Nielsen and Dr. Kristy Dhaliwal.

We have excellent dentists – both women and men – that offer exceptional, high-quality care. While it may be difficult to quantify why patients choose a dentist of a particular gender, we’ve found these reasons play a larger part in our patients’ perception of choosing a female dentist (even though all five of our dentists encompass these traits).
Comfort and Compassion
Patients often tend to look to our female dentists for a gentler approach to checkups and cleanings. Some patients are naturally uneasy about dental procedures and have come to rely on Dr. Nielsen and Dr. Dhaliwal to help them overcome unnecessary fear while ensuring they receive thorough treatment and outstanding care.
Empathy and Communication
Several of our patients have a long dental history or challenges in the past that they want to be sure the dentist understands before starting treatment. All of our dentists at North Boulder Dental Group, including Dr. Nielsen and Dr. Dhaliwal, are expert listeners and insist on a thorough dental history to understand any lifestyle and medical considerations that may be affecting oral health. This approach offers additional comfort to patients and allows open communication to establish a healthy relationship with the dentist!
Perception and Preference
In many cases, patients don’t have a sound reason why they prefer a female dentist, they just do! Like any other medical relationship, some patients simply feel more comfortable with a woman dentist. In some cases, it is due to religious or cultural beliefs that require a female dental professional. But, whether it is smaller hands to provide treatment and dental enhancements or the rapport they believe is easier to build, patients seek out our female dentists for a range of dental services.
